OUR AVAILABLE DATES FOR 2025/26

My name is Naw Grawng Nhkum (Naw), and I am a figurative artist and a painter from Fort Worth, Texas.

What I came here to do

Pottery Farm Gallery, situated in the stunning southern countryside of France, serves as an escape for me to break away from everyday life in one of the largest metropolitan areas in North America. This hilltop sanctuary offered not just space, but a rare permission to slow down, experiment, and reconnect with my creative intuition. The discoveries I make here, along with those from my next residency, will play a significant role in informing my MFA application this fall.

From the moment I arrived, the Pottery Farm Gallery exceeded my expectations. My private room was spacious and comfortable, offering both rest and creative space. Just steps away from the house, two completely different landscapes caught my attention every day. To one side, a bright sunflower field full of movement and buzzing insects, and to the other, a wide, quiet hill of empty fields that seemed to go on forever. The way these two places contrasted with each other, one lively and the other peaceful, became a big inspiration for me. Even though the August heat made me take breaks in the shade, I still spent most of my time working outside. There, surrounded by these views, I created a series of pastel drawings and one large painting that came directly from this experience.

I am also lucky to connect with fellow residents who’ve made the atmosphere both supportive and vibrant. Our host, Hilary, has also been generous in providing local tours, recommendations, and transportation to those in need. Thanks to her, I enjoyed two unforgettable days exploring Toulouse, where I visited museums, iconic landmarks, and even tried France-exclusive McDonald’s items.  As my first time in France, every day has brought something new to cherish: the impossibly good dairy products (truly next level), my newfound love for all things "canard", and the quiet magic of countryside life.

Working outdoors in the countryside for the first time while capturing the surrounding nature sparked my new interest in the naturalism art movement. I hope to create outdoors again when a new opportunity arises. Although I will not be finishing my painting at this residency, I now feel powerfully drawn to figurative works of animalistic beasts and mythical creatures. This vision is growing clearer and more urgent, bringing me closer to the artistic path of my role model, Miwa Komatsu. With each piece, I become more certain: this is the direction I must follow.
